If we believe it is possible, it will be possible

We all know it. Just like in the movie The Matrix, there seems to be something that's not right, something that could be different. We live in a world that seems artificial, communities separated by roads and highways, sprawled out beyond walking distance. Even our homes are spaced just far enough away to help us watch TV in solitude. Our sense of community needs renewal and a renaissance. And we must integrate with our culture of TV and computers. If we could transform something that usually divides us and channels energy away from civic life, and reflect that in the opposite direction, to enhance civic/social/community life, that could be a key to a community renaissance. Communities are networked through media. Society can only be changed through the media, the media is what binds us together and is our network. Our minds are shaped through the media; we synthesize our own opinions as derivatives of what we have gained as knowledge through the media. I believe the key to achieving as a society our common dreams is reform of the media. And this is not a reform our government can do, its only a reform that the people can achieve. Part of our culture is dualistic in the fact that there are those who have accepted reality as it is, and have adapted. They find soul in things like McDonalds and Wal-Mart. They are no less human than the other type of people, the dreamers. However, the dreamers belong to a different mindset. They accept reality today, but hope for a better tomorrow. Where we don't have to adapt to a mechanistic world, but can create a better world and turn back the clock, or turn it forward though a renaissance. Both views of the world are correct in their own way. The realists are right because if they think its better to not struggle and just accept reality, adaptation is the only way. A society of realists will reinforce their own beliefs by inaction and sustain the reality that forces them to adapt. The dreamers are right too, especially if they are active with their "faith". They realize that reality is composed of our collective actions, and if we form a better society then change is possible. A major factor in determining an individual's mindset is the media. The media is the key to revolution and community renaissance. People who encourage people that there is no "reality" but the reality we make for ourselves. People who have access to the media and publicly pronounce the idea that reality is formed by our collective actions have the power to inspire others. If everybody in the world at once changed their outlook for the better, and changed their actions, we would have a healed society overnight. However, simply the knowledge that our reality is collective is not enough. There has to be a spearhead, a growing network to synchronize these dreams. We must send a great signal that now we can begin the dream. The goal would be to achieve our dreams. To ensure that everybody in the world is guaranteed the right to pursue life, liberty, and happiness. If we believe it is possible, it will be possible. |
